Blood vessels, nerves and supporting cells and tissues have all been injured. Tissues which have died cannot be replaced. But much can be done for other tissues remaining alive but not functioning, even many years after the stroke or brain injury.

These changes are possible, even 10 or more years after the stroke or brain injury. However, time is of essence. The sooner treatment is started, the more effective the treatments would probably be. Ideally, the treatments should start within 6 hours after the stroke or brain injury. After that the body's reactions tend to diminish the effectiveness of the treatment. Even though great results are often achieved, the results generally could have been better had immediate treatment been given.
